BioPhysical Model of Mind, Body and Spirit

The human body is a remarkable symphony of matter, energy, information and consciousness. While modern medicine and biology have focused almost exclusively on the dense, material aspects of the body (bones, muscles, organs, nerves, etc.), ancient traditions have always understood that all the aspects of our existence are inseparable.

As our culture moves slowly toward a “new” paradigm of mind-body holism, for thousands of years these traditions have taught that there is no connection between mind and body because there is fundamentally no separation between them – therefore, no connection is needed.

Body and Soul will explore many conventional notions of the body – including important concepts from standard anatomy and physiology – but from the unique perspective of how the body is organized as a physical expression of consciousness. In addition to lecture and discussion, we will use guided meditation, movement, touch and sound to directly experience the essential unity of life and the factors that influence it.

An eclectic overview of the body that includes the basic supporting and functional structures and systems including the organs, nervous system, endocrine system etc. We will also present the energetic system which will include chakras, meridians and the energetic shells that surround us.

The first class will present these systems as they coalesce from pure consciousness into the energetic and then into the physical. Using images from embryology we will see how divine intelligence and functional need create the systems of the body and also define there relationships. It is problems within these interactions that create the basis for disease and disharmony. Each organ and system will be simply covered in this light. The goal of this first session is to see the synergy of our parts and systems and to understand the basics of what they do.

The second class will be an in depth review of the first session. We  will present “pictures” of the functional  aspects of each organ and system, the observable personality of each. When these patterns are pointed out, we recognize them and can then use this recognition to “see” what is in balance and what is not. A short presentation will be included on the energetics of relationships. We will also use techniques  from Qi Gong , movement and meditation to enhance each participants direct somatic experience of the mystical body that touches the earth.

Inner Music

Inner Music Theory - 5 classes
This class covers the fundamentals of music theory with an emphasis on how each aspect affects human beings on all levels. The course uses creative techniques to help students acquire a deeper understanding of the nuances of intervals and musical composition. The course uses the harmonic structure as the basis for the exploration of the underlying meaning of musical intervals.

This class will teach the fundamentals of rhythm and music notation: ABCs of notes, how notes combine to create intervals, scales and modes and how these combine in turn into voice lines, chords and harmonic motion. Throughout the factual material we will use our senses to perceive experientially….to explore the energies behind intervals and certain types of motion and rhythms. We will see, and experience, how harmony relates to the overtone series as well. The goal is to be able to navigate through the matrix of sound fundamentals with confidence, creating as you go…. And to experience energetically what is learned intellectually.

Ancient Tunings and Sacred Scales - 2 classes
Study of the structure and meaning of ancient tunings including Pythagorean, Just Intonation, Chinese and Indian tunings.

The underlying structure of ancient, non-tempered tuning systems will be deconstructed along with the strategies that created them.  The goal being to acquire a deeper understanding of “internal coherence” and explore whether specific sonic structures are “sacred” and suitable mediums for the transformation of consciousness. 

The overtone, or harmonic series, will be taken apart and looked at as nature’s sonic DNA, its underlying vibrational code. The mathematical geometric difference between a tone and a noise. Symmetrical and sequential rules of the harmonic series. After an understanding of the harmonic series has been acquired, two traditional tuning systems will be examined. 

The Cyclic System, which also encompassed the Pythagorean approach and is most thoroughly realized in the Chinese culture, will be studied for its ability to create coherent scales. We'll explore how this approach applies to sound healing and/or the future of music?

The “Shruti” System, a term from Indian classical music, which also encompasses various other non-tempered systems--notably “Just Intonation” as well as many Middle Eastern, African, and Indonesian styles--is based on a sophisticated way of calculating tonal relationships that keeps the internal structure of a scale at its most vibrationally coherent.

The key to any tuning system’s relevance is the kind of meaningful patterns, geometry, or in musical terms, scales and intervals it creates.  Understanding the internal coherence within the scales’ matrix lends a much deeper and more useful and practical understanding of vibrations’ effect on consciousness and how to engage and work with it. Students will also be introduced to new visionary and extraordinary strategies for creating “sacred scales” derived from the logic and wisdom of the ancient ways, though they’re new.

Students will listen to recordings made from scales that incorporate these principles to help them understand and experience on a deeper and intuitive level.  Along with experiencing these ancient and extraordinary tunings there will be demonstrations on the Sitar, an Indian lute, and the Bazantar, a newly invented instrument that was built specifically to reveal these structures of internal coherence in a new and dramatic way.

Natural Acoustic Sound Healing Instruments

The Healing Voice
5 Classes
You will learn a technique for using your voice for healing. You will learn the wide range of sounds that can be made with the voice and their effects. But most importantly, you will learn how to connect to spirit and trust that spirit will create the sounds in your voice that are most needed. We will also discuss and practice techniques for holding your own field so as not to take on the energy being released by the client. You will come away with a powerful skill for helping yourself and others.

Experiential Foundations for Sound Healing

We base the sound healing work on two assumptions:
a) To be centered, sensitive and responsive, we must be familiar with different feeling states, and learn how sound, energy and intention can surrender into a self-aware state.
b) To become conscious with sound, we must develop physical/sensory recognition of subtle changes and acquire a relationship with the inner landscape through Spiritual attunement.
During the three sessions we will be working with exercises from Three Key Practices (indicated below):
a) Practice 1:Experiencing the different levels of receiving and centering
b) Practice 2: Opening your intention to that which is happening
c) Practice 3: Decoding what has happened into application

CLASS DETAILS

- Utilizing Sound for yourself
Issues that will be addressed:
1 –We will explore the question, “what is receiving?” Additionally, we will address issues of what stops us from feeling comfortable in the container within which we work.
2 - During week one, we will work with Practice 1: Experiencing the different levels of receiving and centering.
a) Physical awareness of the different levels of receiving and centering
b) Emotional centering in physical stillness through breathe
c) Attunement to boundary and simultaneously to what is alive between us.
3 - We will also begin to make our own sounds and train the ear.
a) Exercises in simple practices of listening to and making harmonics.
c) Practicing being responsive to all kinds of sounds.
d) Deconstructing sounds.
e) Listening with silence.
Homework - Receive, listen and make sound using Practice 1 lessons
Students will receive instruction to observe, document and draw conclusion about what happens to them when they do the following exercises
1) Make specific assigned sounds
2) Listen to specific assigned sounds
3) Receive sounds of their own choosing.

- Utilizing Sound For Others
1) We will review and formulate individual programs for self-preparation based on Practice 1, “Receiving and centering”.
2) We will work with Practices 2 & 3 (Opening intention to what is happening, and Decoding and application), using other students as partners.
a) We will observe with soft eyes and see subtle differences in our partner’s energetic fields.
b) Explore kinetic awareness and learn to differentiate levels of magnetic pull.
c) Learn to maintain boundary while accessing subtle levels of information.
3) We will begin working with Practice 3 by utilizing feedback. There will be time to do a practice healing and to gain feedback from that experience.
4) We will discuss the decoding process. We will also discuss the internal attitudes that allow for effective conduct in these circumstances.

Homework -1 hour for each assignment
1. Receive the same inner subtle awareness of sound in different settings. Notice what distracts you.
2. Work with someone as a subject for a healing and observe what is easy and what is difficult about doing this away from the classroom.

– Utilizing Sound for others – Becoming the practitioner
We will review the previous classes and go further with learning to apply Practice 3 – Decoding what has happened into application. We will learn to be non-invasive and courageously connected as we receive, intend and apply ourselves to the healing.
1) Review Preparation: Centering and being comfortable and ready to work.
2) Learn exercises to prepare the voice.
3) Time to explore making sounds.
4) Apply the 3 Practices with your partner through giving a healing: being in receiving, opening intention, and decoding with application as the tools to be effective healers.
5) Discuss the decoding process and the different interpretations of sound as it applies to your partner.
6) Review traps and the possible negative aspects of the work.
Homework: Working with a partner, perform a sound healing and write down your observations of your own work and the responses of the person who received the healing.

Sacred Voice
2 classes
The voice is the ultimate healer, self contained within our sacred body. We will explore what we can "hear" when we truly listen… and then re-sound with it.
We will discuss how to use the voice as an intentional healing form and how to therapeutically focus the voice for chakra balancing, emotional clearing, and relaxation using gongs, drums, shruti box and chimes. Exercises utilizing multiple modalities will engage our self expression and break through perceived limitations and inhibitions. We will learn to access the sublimated pure tone through the vocal exercises developed with Rudolf Steiner (“Uncovering the Voice method”). Sessions will include improvisation and a creative experiential format that allows for discovery and joy in the singing process. Our goal is to access the "healing moment" through our vocalizations.

When used with intention, our own voice can be a miraculous healing tool. It is a primordial pathway into our body and soul. In this workshop we will explore how sound vibrates our inner body. With toning techniques, we will experience where sound resonates and how to use that vibration to massage from the inside out, clearing the chakras, relaxing the body and releasing old outdated imprinting. We will learn chants from several ethnic traditions and feel the commonality and differences of rhythm and pulse. Through Vocal Meditation we will discover how to create our own sacred chant.

Sanskrit Chanting

Sanskrit is the language of mantra. Mantras are meaningful, harmonious words, phrases, verses or portions of scripture helpful for meditation, prayer and spiritual study. With their inherent rhythm and music, they contain a vibrational message difficult to capture through mere reading or translation. The purpose of chanting is to stimulate higher brain centers, to energize the whole body, and to help one feel more deeply the essence of the mantras, which is, ultimately, beyond words and language.

This class will cover pronunciation of the Sanskrit alphabet and an introduction to chanting mantras. Included will be selections from the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and devotional hymns. We will also go over correct pronunciation of many asana names, as well as some technical terms related to Yoga.

' You can see T.V., listen to the radio, read the newspapers. You can observe the world's history. One thing is common in the past, present and future, throughout the planet : wherever there is war in any form - whether guerilla warfare, religious war, political war, individual, domestic, social, national or international war, highjacking or airplane bombing - the cause behind it is the untrained and undisciplined mind and heart. In this condition, what can be done ? What is our duty and responsibility ? Should we silently watch...? What should we do to try to prevent these wars, calamities and catastrophes ?

You cannont change the human mind, but you can change its contents. When mental contents change, then our hearts automatically become the divine center of unity. Here, by "change" I mean transformation of the mind through Sanskrit, because Sanskrit is the cosmic language, the language of unity. Sanskrit is the mother of all languages. It is the divine language with power to unite the whole world. Because of Sanskrit, India was formerly the enlightened guru of the entire planet.

We have the English language and other modern languages for political and business purposes. Now we need a divine language to unite our hearts and minds for world peace. Due to modern scientific inventions and discoveries, the whole planet has become like one house. But our minds are still primitive, disunited. The thinking mind is the automatic problem-making machine.

When an individual does not resolve his or her own problems, then the problems become domestic. If the family and house are out of order, then naturally the whole society becomes lawless, disorderly. When society is out of order, then we get national and international war in various forms. Therefore, to avoid chaos and confusion, we must discover the center of unity in our own hearts and minds.

Every problem originates from within. Countless subtle problems lie deeply rooted in the unconscious mind. We cannot solve these problems, because the untrained, undisciplined mind itself is the problem maker. Therefore we need to raise the contents of our hearts and minds from lower to higher, spiritual plane through Sanskrit which vibrates deep layers of the psyche through pranic vibration. Sanskrit is the way leading toward perfection and unity.

Chanting Sanskrit, listening to authentic Sanskrit chanting with a quiet, meditative mind and studying Sanskrit grammar will stimulate automatic and spontaneous psychoanalysis, psychosynthesis and psychotherapy. Sanskrit is "quantum healing" for body and mind.

Therefore, in addition to modern languages, we need Sanskrit, the language of the heart and unity, the language of integratrion. Our life needs all modern languages for multiplicity, while we need Sanskrit as the means for unity.

Exploration of the structure of sound. Listening to and researching the effect of natural sound healing instruments on the body, psyche and spirit. Planning and implementing a complete sound healing treatment for a client. Extensive practice using natural acoustic instruments and voice sound healing.

Various sound and musical exercises to experience ourselves as sound, as emotion, as alive.

- Exploring Frequencies - We will use a tone generator to find the frequencies of each of your chakras. Of course, this is just an exercise, we can't really know if each person will find the actual frequencies. The point is to begin to learn the frequency spectrum using your body as a reference point. Is there a different sound for each chakra? We will also use a spectrum analyzer to look at the harmonic structure of your voice, and the harmonic structure of common instruments.

- Finding Your Root Frequency - We will explore what it means to find our own root frequencies and see how we use them for centering. Useful for personal meditative purposes and perhaps for sharing within a group. (Try sounding them all out together). What does it mean to have a root frequency?We will place each student on the sound table and play each note on a keyboard to find the frequency that resonates the most throughout your system. We will then produce a complex drone for you to play on the sound table in order to center and ground you. You will also make a CD of this drone so you can play it wherever you like.

- Finding the Frequency of Organs and Endocrine Glands. Using a technique from Dr. Jeffrey Thompson we will find the frequencies that support each organ.

- Using the voice to do Sound Healing on fellow students - We will use Lisa Rafel's sound healing voice technique to move sound energy through the body.

- Heart Monitor Research - We will hook up a students to our Heart Monitor and Galvanic Skin Response units and play various types of sounds and music to see the effect on various parts of the brain and the heart.

- Experiencing PsychoAcoustic Music Projects. This lab has been designed to provide you with a good perspective on how sound and music can affect us. It also helps you to design your own effective projects. This lab is in association with Amrita's component within the PsychoAcoustics Overview course. As you listen your partner will fill out a form document your response to the various types of musical experiences.

- Singing and toning - We will practice multitrack singing/toning while holding a specific intention.

- Creation and performance of a sound healing project for another student.

This class covers the function and operation of equipment in a recording studio and how to make better quality recordings. Hands-on experience is provided to reinforce the learning process.

• Effects and Processing: How delay, reverb, flanging, chorusing, phasing, and compression create different psychoacoustic effects in the body, mind and spirit.
• Structures of Mixes using the Virtual Mixer Concept

In this class you will learn ProTools, the number one software for recording, editing and mixing sound. Knowing this program empowers you to do many things that you would otherwise have to pay a recording engineer to do.

Sound Healing Music Production Labs

Design and creation of a PsychoAcoustic Audio Project using the Institute's audio recording and sound transmission technologies. Students will create, record, mix and present audio projects with a specific intention.

Throughout the labs you will often be using ProTools software.

Lab Assignments:

- Creating PsychoAcoustically oriented sound projects. In these labs you will create a sound project for yourself or for another student. It could be for any purpose: Relaxation, Meditation, Raising Consciousness, Learning, or some specific issue. You will have access to a wide range of synthesizers, sound modules, live instruments, nature sounds, binaural beats, and a PsychoAcoustic sound library.

- Personal Sound Sculptures, made up of sounds and/or music that you utter, or create. This project can be recorded for your own personal benefit, to use in times of stress or when you simply want to relax and enjoy something that you have created, exclusively for you. Using realizations and techniques learned in class, you will be able to choose from any range of sounds that you can imagine; voice, Nature sounds, synthesized sounds, acoustic instruments, drums, running water, etc.!

- PsychoAcoustic Recording Session - We will record live musicians with a specific intention. We will covering miking, headphone mixes, and techniques for illiciting the best quality performance possible.

- Mixing - You will mix various Sound Healing projects.

- Final Project - Creation of a sound project for either professional applications for sound practitioners therapists, or as a CD for commercial release or sale. This project will have whatever intention you may choose to give it (meditation, relaxation, transformation release of stuck energy, learning, productivity or healing).
